Welcome! Day 20 (Aug
28) of North to Alaska
Today we started our day with a wonderful pancake
breakfast. Cassie had banana in hers while might were just plain old pancakes.
Our chef knew just how I liked them. We had all morning free as were did not
depart until after lunch. So after we packed our luggage Cassie decided to
finish her book and spent time in the great room. I was determined to walk so I
took a leisurely hike down the very rocky beach. I walked around a couple of
points until the rocks became large and I would be required to climb. I took
the easy route and reversed my course. In all it was about an hour walk. I then
joined Cassie in the great room until lunch. At lunch we joined a group for the
Resurrection Bay Tour. This is a 2:30 tour around Resurrection Bay off the
coast of Steward. For the most part the sea was very calm but for a stretch of
open sea the water was pretty choppy. I learned a new term to describe the
waves “motion in the ocean”. Luckily for us the motion in the ocean was short
lived. We did not see any whales but did see some harbor seals, puffins,
mountain goats, sea lions and Paul Allen’s yacht. We reached Steward around
4:30 and waited for the train. We boarded and headed north toward Girwood at
6:00 PM. We took the same route back as we had used on Tuesday morning. It was
raining but the mountains and glaciers still looked magnificent. As we passed
the eagle’s nest we did see the parents watching over it. We arrived in Girwood
and checked into our day’s destination “The Hotel Alyeska” a little after 9:00
PM.
The Hotel Alyeska is Alaska’s premier year-round resort
destination. This is Alaska only true ski resort. When you hear “Resort” this
is the type of place that comes to mind.
Since we had dinner on the train this brought day 20 to
a close. What adventure will tomorrow bring.
