Day 03

Welcome! Day3 (Aug 11) of North to Alaska

Quote “A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.” – John Steinbeck

We had a great stay in Casper. The bed was just right, the hot tub was hot, the tread mill worked, breakfast was ok would have been great had the Cheerios been real. The eggs and sausage were good and of course the automatic pancake maker is still amazing.

We left and traveled north on I25 to I90 in Billings MT, then west toward Butte, turning north on US287 (Yes the same one which runs thru Fort Worth) to Helena and then on to Shelby, MT. We drove nearly 11 hours. This should be the most driving we will do in any one day. Again my initial plan is to get into Canada as quickly as possible.

Shelby is a small town but has a couple of nice motels. Not but not many places to eat. We found a small truck stop which had some fried chicken for Cassie to eat. I had a corn dog.

At the turn from I90 to US287 we did stop for gas. There was a small bakery next door. As I finished the gas Cassie can out and said “we could not have stopped at a better place they have everything” so we got a couple of large rolls to eat later in the day. They both were very good. We each only ate about half saving the rest for tomorrow.

I have always thought west Texas was a vast waste land, i.e. you could travel a long ways without seeing much. WY has that beat by a long way, from Casper to Billings it all looks the same better than the west Texas flat land but almost no people or places to stop. At one point we saw a sign next gas 65 miles and it was at least that far before we saw a place to stop. Along I90 in MT is not much better but there are several small places to stop and you do see some trees and mountains. Once we got to Helena we were in the mountains and the scenery was breath taking. As we got near Shelby we saw many wheat fields being harvested. The golden fields are just beautiful.

Tomorrow is another day we will see what it brings.

  1. I hope you're soaking up some of the mountain air and rain to bring back! Now that school has started, I'm ready for a change of seasons. It sounds like y'all are making great time! I hope you took some pictures of the wheat fields - I bet it is beautiful.
